SAID Milestones


1974

  • The Total Communication foundation organized.
  • The Southeast Asian Institute for the Deaf opened with two students at # 2 La Trinidad, New Manila
  • Peace Corps Volunteers were the first teachers at SAID

 

1975

  • First summer course on Total Communication conducted.
  • DEAF FILIPINO published maiden issue.
  • Academic program strengthened with:
    • Reseach & development program
    • Curriculum committee
    • Speech therapy
    • Seminar for parents & caregivers

1978

  • 4-day interaction with Xavier School
  • Awarded VOLUNTEER REHABILITATION WORKERS OF THE YEAR
  • Launched "Wikang Kumpas"

1979

  • Cesar P. Macuja named Chairman of SAID Board of Trustees
  • First Training Program for Asian Educators of the Deaf held at PICC

1981

  • Moved to new site at 52 Dapitan Street
  • Granted permit to open complete elementary & High School
  • First Sign Mass celebrated

1982

  • DLSU conducted academic performance evaluation.
  • First commencement exercises for elementary held
  • Move to present site with Maryknoll college compound.
  • Principal attended International Seminar on Deafness at Gallaudet

1983

  • Graduate program on Special Education launched at Maryknoll
  • SAID won first place at quiz Bee for the Deaf

1985

  • Finger math introduced.
  • Library received donation from International School
  • Steel fence for school grounds donated by parent.

1986

  • Tripartite Educational consortium launched
  • Stella Bonoan's one-woman exhibit at PITC
  • First Commencement exercises of the High school held.

1987

  • Student handbook produced
  • Summer course on Language Development for the Hearing Impaired conducted by Gallaudet.
  • School athletes won 2 trophies at Olympic for the Disabled.
  • School Choir participated in 1st anniversary of EDSA Revolution.
  • Mainstreaming program coordinated with Miriam College

1988

  • Psychological test revealed superior abilities of several preschoolers.
  • Gallaudet conducted two summer courses:
  • Sign communication & Education
  • Psychology of the Hearing Impaired
  • Contributed to DECS workshops on:
  • Handbook on the Basic Sign vocabulary for Public Schools
  • Livelihood Education Instructional Materials
  • Produced first preschool workbooks on Language and Number Experiences
  • Interaction program with PSD, PAD Poveda, Ateneo, Miriam & Batino
  • Two graduates enrolled in US post secondary schools.
  • Sign Choir performed at two major presentations.
  • Student government organized

1989

  • Stella Bonoan's 2nd one-woman exhibit held at PITC
  • Multipurpose building blessed

1990

  • Distinguished Recognition awarded to Mr. Ruben P. Bonoan

1991

  • First batch graduated from Computer Operation

1992

  • Speech and Auditory Training Center inaugurated

1993

  • Multipurpose hall & vocational Training Center donor honored.
  • ART ATTACK by Stella Bonoan exhibited at Shangrila.

1994

  • Parent Teacher Deaf Action Group honored

1995

  • SAID interpreters participated in evening news program
  • Delegated sent to:
    • Asian Pacific Congress on Deafness
    • World Youth Day
    • Asian Conference of Pastoral Teacher of the Deaf
  • James O. Lim cited as Distinguished Benefactor

1997

  • Award given to Bishop's Commission of MISEREOR
  • First batch of Gallaudet practicum students sent to SAID

1998

  • Professor Frances Parson visited SAID
  • Second batch of Gallaudet practicumers sent to SAID

1999

  • Information dissemination of deaf community via RPN 9 program
  • Third batch of Gallaudet practicumers sent to SAID
