Background:

Bigay Buhay Multipurpose Cooperative

Bigay Buhay (Building Lives) Multipurpose Cooperative (BBMC) is a cooperative of Persons With Disability (PWD) binded together for a common goal – to uplift the socio economic condition and achieve independent living of PWDs at the grassroots level.

BBMC was registered in the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) on September 10, 1991 as the first cooperative duly organized and managed by PWDs in the Philippines. It is an offshoot of an organization called Concerned Handicapped Students (CODES), which was formed in 1990.

Most of the first members of CODES were studying at Trinity College in Quezon City. The organization general objectives then was “ to pursue our dream of a normal and independent life” instead of perpetually depending on others. At that time, we were living in an NGO that provided food and shelter to us. Its main line of business is school chair and bag making project.

Vision and Mission Statement

BBMC aims to improve the socio-economic of its PWD members through education, training and the establishment of sustainable Community Based Livelihood and Employment Projects.

BBMC has two undertakings; Business and Services. The objective of the cooperative is to be fully independent stage becomes possible through the viability and sustainability of livelihood projects.

As service oriented, the cooperative commits to attend to the physical, social, intellectual and spiritual needs of its members. The Cooperative also commits to the development of full potentials of its members and young PWDs.

BBMC’s first three years were largely focused on Human resource development. We went through intensive cooperative education and training. On the other hand, through the proceed we got from small finance generation efforts and also through donations, we were able to buy a second hand tricycle to augment our income. Soon, we also put up a small commodity store in our residence.
